Best Time Window
- 6:30 AM - 9:30 AM: Low-light midge and streamer window — work sculpin patterns along rocky structure and fish midge nymphs in the tailouts before the sun hits the water.
- 10:30 AM - 2:00 PM: Prime BWO and terrestrial time — watch for rising fish in slower flats and fish dry flies or emergers during the hatch; ants and hoppers along the banks from midday on.
- 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM: Late caddis activity and evening nymphing — swing a CDC caddis through slower runs or drop back to a Frenchie in the main seams as light fades.
Guide's Tip
From the benchWith flows at 2,190 CFS, wade carefully and focus your efforts on the first two miles of the A-section where the current breaks and trout stack in the seams. During the midday BWO window, switch to a single small nymph or dry fly and target fish you can see actively feeding in the slower, clearer water along the edges. Keep your leader long — 12 to 14 feet — and your tippet fine (6X) to avoid spooking fish in the clear 58°F water. If the surface action dies, drop back to a tungsten nymph fished tight to the bottom in 3 to 5 feet of water through the main channel slots.
